Dr. Jeffy: This is a tough one.
Brachioplasty — arm lift surgery — is the most "definitive" solution
in the sense that it physically removes the excess skin.
But it comes with serious trade-offs that I don't think women fully
understand before they consider it.
First, the
scarring. The incision typically runs from your armpit all the way down to
your elbow.
That scar is permanent.
And for many women, the scar ends up being MORE visible and
embarrassing than the original saggy skin.
I've had patients come to me after brachioplasty devastated — they
traded one insecurity for another.
Second, the cost. You're looking at $8,000 to $12,000. Some surgeons charge per arm, so it could be even more.
Third, the recovery. You
can't use your arms normally for 4 to 6 weeks.
No lifting, no reaching, limited mobility. For a working woman or a
mom, that's a major disruption.
Fourth, the
results aren't guaranteed.
Complications happen. Asymmetry, poor scarring, infection, nerve
damage. And many women need revision surgery down the line.
I'm not anti-surgery when it's truly necessary. But I think it
should be a last resort — not the first thing you consider when
creams and exercise didn't work.
